Sandra Carter is running for her first two-year term as Village TrusteeSandra Carter May 2014She has lived in Hamilton for 42 years, though her soft accent betrays her origin in Texas. She has used her higher education at Baylor University in wide-flung places as she traveled with John, her husband, as he pursued knowledge and insight. Their travels saw Sandra teaching in Louisville, Kentucky, for three years; London, England, for two; Cambridge, Massachusetts, for three; Colombo, Sri Lanka, for one; and finally in Hamilton, New York, where she taught in the elementary school, following her students attentively at least until their graduation.

When the Carters came to Hamilton in 1972, Sandra spent her first year as Resident Supervisor at Chapel House, welcoming guests who sought a quiet place for contemplation. Thereafter, the Carters settled into the village where they became active members in the Baptist Church and Sandra began to explore the world of volunteerism—serving in bloodmobiles, meals-on-wheels, the Snack program, the hospital auxiliary, as an officer in the League of Women Voters [yes, there was a local chapter at that time] and as a volunteer reading tutor in the elementary school.

Meanwhile, the Carters had become a family of four with the coming of son Christopher John and daughter Mary Elizabeth. Christopher John now lives and works in Japan-- but Mary Elizabeth is nearby in Norwich, so Sandra currently enjoys the short trip south to help with grandson Samuel.

Over the years, Sandra’s volunteer activities followed her children to HCS, where she served first as a classroom helping parent and held various offices in the PTO. After several years of volunteer work in the school, the superintendent suggested that Sandra might want to come on as a full-time employee, which she did and spent twelve happy years as a teacher at HCS. After her retirement in 2000, Sandra gave another six years of service to the school as a member of the school board.  Sandra also has been active in other causes as they emerged; for example, she shared in leadership of the successful work of New Yorkers for Verified Voting in Madison County.

Just-for-fun, Sandra enjoys singing with the Voices of Tabernacle and participating in the Fortnightly Club. She treasures Hamilton as the home where her children were raised in a safe environment and with clean air and water. She promises every effort to protect the future of the village as a Trustee.  Sandra is a registered Democrat.
