Letters in Support of Harvey Kliman

Harvey,

Susan and I were delighted when we read your excellent letter in today’s MYW announcing your candidacy for mayor and readiness to accept the Democratic nomination while enabling Republicans and others to vote for you on an independent line.

Independence, experience and transparency are not mere words that set you apart from two other mayoral contenders, assuming Margaret, who has never had to run a contested race for mayor, will seek reelection.  Your timing preempting her possible announcement is excellent.   Of the three candidates only you can credibly claim to be an innovator who will guide this community responsibly into the future.    The service you have rendered this community and fellow citizens since your arrival, I believe less than ten years ago, is unprecedented.

I was reassured, though not surprised, by the way you define the relationship between the village and Colgate and your role as mayor in a college town.   Your sentence of overseeing (not micromanaging) with the trustees the excellent village staff resonates and applies in my opinion also to how the village board has been operating for some time, especially under the current mayor.

Thank you for offering the village your time, energy and wisdom in a way Susan and I have urged you and Debbie for some time.

Letter of Support for Harvey Kliman

I am writing in support of Harvey Kliman’s candidacy for Mayor of the Village of Hamilton. Over the last three years I have had the pleasure of working with Harvey on the Town of Hamilton’s Comprehensive Plan Committee, and find his hard work, expertise, and ability to work with others an asset to the committee. Harvey’s understanding of issues effecting Hamilton, from land use to ambulance service, have proven invaluable in helping to shape a vision for the Town’s future.

His past experience with out-of-state municipal government is an asset, as is his dedication to the Hamilton community through his numerous volunteer commitments with local government, emergency care, and environmental groups.

Harvey would put all of these invaluable strengths to use in working with our community as Hamilton Village Mayor.

Chris Rossi,Hamilton Town Council,
Chair of the Comprehensive Plan Committee

In support of Harvey Kliman:

You have a chance to bring new leadership to the Village of Hamilton on June 16th by voting for Harvey Kliman for Mayor. There are several significant reasons why your vote for Harvey Kliman makes sense.

Harvey was appointed to the Village of Hamilton Master Plan Committee in ____ because the Mayor knew that he had the Planning experience and the Zoning experience and the leadership experience to contribute to a review of the Master Plan. The Mayor and Board of Trustees also appointed Harvey to the all important Airpark/Airport Commission; this commission controls the future of Economic Development at the Airport. Because of Harvey’s extensive website background, the Commission asked Harvey to rebuild the Airport/Airpark website, from scratch.

Harvey was appointed to the Town of Hamilton Comprehensive Plan Committee by the Town Board because of his 9 years (???) in municipal government. Harvey was appointed to the Hamilton Deer Committee because he is a national expert on Lyme Disease caused by Deer Ticks and has been able to educate the committee and the public about the increasing risks of contracting Lyme Disease due to the increasing deer population crisis.

As a scientist, Harvey knows how to research problems and to search for the best solution. As a Chemist, Harvey understands the $8,000,000 complex water quality project which the Village of Hamilton is facing. In meetings and on committees, village residents often turn to Harvey for help in looking for ways to solve problems.

As a Village resident, Harvey’s first priority is the Village of Hamilton. He will be able to represent us when he meets with Colgate, when he meets with developers, when he meets with business interests.

Our neighbors who have selected Harvey to be the current President of the The Hamilton Club and the current President of the Southern Madison Heritage Trust know that Harvey is a proven leader. He will exhibit the same leadership as Mayor of our Village.

Harvey married Hamilton native Debbie Sill Kliman 49 years ago and has known our community for a long time.  We invite you to read more about Harvey at www.hamiltondemocrats.org.

Sincerely,
Bill and Carolyn Todd

To the editors,

We are writing in strong support of Harvey Kliman’s candidacy for Mayor of the Village of Hamilton.

We have known Harvey for nine years as our neighbor. He has relevant government experience having served as township supervisor in Chadds Ford, PA for six years after serving 14 years on Zoning and Planning Boards. Since “retiring” to Hamilton, Harvey has been very active in community service, serving as Hamilton Club president, Village Master Plan Committee, Airport/Airpark Commission, Southern Madison Heritage Trust president, Chenango Canal Association secretary, Upstate Institute Community Board, Village Symphony Committee, Town Comprehensive Plan Committee, and SOMAC volunteer driver.

All of these experiences make Harvey an excellent candidate for Village Mayor. He clearly has the background, ability, desire, and energy to work with all the constituencies in our small but complex village, including the university, the business community, and all the stakeholders who value our beautiful rural location.

We agree with Harvey when he says that he would bring to the mayor’s office independence, experience, and transparency and that his commitment is to the well-being of our village and its citizens now and in the future. Please remember to vote on June 16.

Sincerely,
Mary Moran and Jordan Kerber

Balmuths recommend Harvey Kliman

 To the editor:

It seems to us that Hamilton is very fortunate, for this coming election, to have as declared candidates for mayor three unusually able and experienced citizens,

Each has made a fine contribution to the well-being of our community and promises to continue to do so, But we would like to single out and recommend Harvey Kliman as exceptionally talented, capable and especially qualified for the position, and so the person most deserving on this occasion of our vote,

We believe Harvey will make a fine and distinguished mayor. He is particularly thoughtful and understanding of the problems of the community, as demonstrated by his past works: volunteer leadership of a great number of civic initiatives, including quiet and effective heading of the Madison County Heritage Trust, while an active member of the Hamilton [Chadds Ford, PA not Hamilton, Ed.] Planning Board, He served as an elected and successful supervisor (six years) in a similar community in which he and his wife, native Debbie Sill, lived before re-settling in Hamilton and he promises to bring this mature experience, understanding and especially fine skills to the leadership of Hamilton,

To the Editor:

I am writing to articulate my strong support of Harvey Kliman for Mayor. Although married to him, I believe I can be objective; like all married couples, we disagree on many things!

As a Village Trustee, I am well aware of the many issues facing the Village - the student living in residential neighborhoods, the necessity for balance between Colgate and the Village, the ever-growing deer herd, and the need for transparency in all areas of village government. Harvey is fully aware of these issues and has been sharing his expertise in one area by being a member of the deer committee.

Harvey spent his career being a creative problem-solver. He will bring this approach to the village. He comes to decisions after considerable thought and consultation with experts, and makes sound decisions. As a municipal government elected official where we previously lived, he brings years of experience to the position of Mayor. Transparency in government is of great concern to him. He has no ties to Colgate, although appreciates the many benefits Colgate brings to Hamilton.

Harvey will be honored to have your support by voting for him for Mayor. I strongly urge you to consider the options, and cast your vote for Harvey Kliman.

In support of Kliman
To the editor:

We are the owners of Patricia's Guest House on Maple Avenue. As entrepreneurs, we bring a special perspective to the campaign for mayor this year. We live and operate our B&B in the residential section of the downtown. We are members of the HBA. We interact with Colgate parents, visiting professors and visitors to our village, giving us the opportunity to meet and know many different groups. We are proud to be ambassadors of our village.

We are voting for Harvey Kliman for mayor because we know that Harvey's skills, background and understanding of complex issues make him the best choice. Harvey, as a village resident, appreciates the concerns of various stakeholders as issues of housing, student rentals, the vibrancy of our downtown retail businesses, and the future of town-gown relations are addressed.

Harvey Kliman has the time to devote to the job of mayor. He has the objectivity to lead the board of trustees as it negotiates with Colgate on a host of issues. He has the freedom and independence to be a true representative of us, those of us who live and work in the village of Hamilton.

Please join us in voting for Harvey Kliman for mayor.

In support of Kliman
To the editor:

I support Harvey Kliman for mayor of the village of Hamilton.

Harvey is committed to serving the people of Hamilton and will use his many years of experience working in the private sector, with local government, and with community-based organizations to advance our collective interests.

Harvey works tirelessly to promote conservation in our community. As president of Southern Madison Heritage Trust he has successfully negotiated agreements that will sustain our local natural resources, improve recreational trail access, and protect historic sites. Through his efforts and leadership, the organization is well positioned to continue its work to improve local environmental quality.

Harvey has a deep understanding of the challenges of white tail deer management. His knowledge of Lyme disease has helped the Deer Task Force recognize important public health impacts and he is committed to the sustained effort necessary for reducing these impacts.

During the past two years I have worked with Harvey on the Town of Hamilton Comprehensive Plan Committee. He is an engaged, thoughtful and dedicated member of this committee. He helped craft a vision that respects the Town's history while at the same time recognizing the need to adapt as we move forward.

Kliman support
To the editor:

A message to village voters, I want to echo the many comments about how good it is, for a change, to have a lively contest for this year's village election of a mayor, People are paying attention to Village government.

The best choice among the three candidates is Harvey Kliman, who brings independence .as well as experience in local governments to the crucial role of mayor.  As a highly professional person with strong academic credentials, he can speak with confident strength to the college. Being in retirement, Harvey is able to represent village interests without compromise.

Harvey Kliman pledges on issues like 24/7 police coverage to learn the will of the taxpayers, He makes no unrealistic promises; instead he promises to do the nitty-gritty work toward discovering the services for which villagers want to pay. He is concerned about mayoral power in secret negotiations and pledges that any proposals that would impact the village will be brought from the beginning to the board of trustees and to relevant committees.

Harvey's style is to solve problems with diplomacy married to strength. He will sensitively negotiate in order to accomplish goals beneficial to the village and to the wider environment.
